Following in the swanky, low-key footsteps of Monroe's on Melrose Avenue, EAST|WEST belies its crass-by-comparison Boystown surroundings.

Though the lounge touts its membership privileges, mere commoners shouldn't fear inferior treatment at this West Hollywood den. Yes, members have access to a private entrance, cozy back room and balcony overlooking the main bar below. Yes, members are invited to special tasting events and can store favorite bottles of wine in illuminated cabinets to be ogled en route to the subterranean bathrooms. But the lack of pretense in the main all-are-welcome bar ensures an airy, pleasant night for a cocktail or a contract negotiation. (Suits from the Pacific Design Center, now housing several top PR companies, come here to talk to clients in peace at the theoretical end of the work day; professional gay men with good taste in clothes fill it up on the weekends.) The flavored martinis are made with fresh fruit and puree—or, in the case of the signature concoction The Perfect Pair, lavender. Owner Trip Wilmot commissioned the decor by Jeff Lowe that captures EAST|WEST's sought-after vibe: The bamboo floors are bright and elegant, but the feet of all loungers, once seated anywhere inside, rest upon plush carpet. —Lonny Pugh
