When Qtopia finally got its liquor license in 2004, the owners decided to rename it. Although The Vanguard is still a dance club, Pasquale Rotella—the man behind the massive hip-hop and electronica summer events Electric Daisy Carnival and Nocturnal Wonderland—helped give the place a makeover.

With his guidance, the Vanguard's owners upgraded the sound and lighting systems, added a café and a lush outdoor patio with cabanas, and have been hosting one-off events. Sew Down and Threadless used the warehouse-like space for runway shows and sample sales; Thievery Corporation made an appearance not long ago, and the indie-rock purveyors at Spaceland Productions present concerts here. But regular events are on the books as well. On Wednesdays, Rotello presents Funktion with the best local and international drum and bass DJs on the decks. Local artists take over until 3am on Thursdays for a night of music, fashion and art in which guest curators present local artists and fashion designers. And on Saturdays, Giant packs the house with ravers eager to dance to superstar DJs. The Sunday residence belongs to Deep, when waxmaster Marques Wyatt spins soulful house beats with Louie Vega. —Alexandra Le Tellier
