If alcohol is the lifeblood of Los Feliz, then The Drawing Room is the hipster heart that keeps the community pumping—even in the morning.

This dive bar caters to Los Feliz kooks, generic hipsters, saucy transvestites and everything else in between. At night, indier-than-thou twentysomethings fight over valuable real estate by the bar while pretending not to notice the punk-rock princess playing darts by the jukebox. (The drinks are less pretentious than the crowd, and among the strongest and cheapest found on Hillhurst Avenue.) But we love the morning crowd. Most sunrise bars cater to golfers looking to loosen their swing, but not here. Blue-collar boys, militant drag queens, preachy expats and off-duty bartenders, looking for a little service of their own, coexist in ribald drunken harmony over Bloody Marys—the only cocktail the kind, old morning bartender knows. Bluebloods searching for an old-fashioned drawing room will be mortified, but who cares? Shine on, you crazy dive bar. —Jon Sattler
