What's better than sitting in the sun, drinking a cold beer (or a spicy bloody Mary) and scoping the hordes of pier visitors?

Rusty's Surf Ranch, one of the first things you pass after schlepping down the hill from Ocean Avenue, provides that opportunity. The small-but-great patio has plenty of umbrella shade, and a see-through barrier to keep the tourist cooties at bay. If the goal is complete escape from those hordes, the interior is pleasant as well: The walls are lined with fun surf memorabilia. There is a full menu of tasty bar fare, live music nightly and karaoke in the afternoon. Please refrain from any Beach Boys. Too unoriginal.—Lesley Balla
