LA offers surprisingly few gay dance spots on the weekends—at least, those sans shirtlessness, glow sticks and house music. This Friday-night dancefest is the exception to this rule.

Though it's gone through some "Is that a tumbleweed I see?" patches, Popstarz has been a fun, low-key dance spot for the last few years. When it was at Ultra Suede on Robertson Boulevard, the Friday-night affair drew a low-key crowd more into shakin' it to cheesy Top 40 than preening in line outside The Abbey across the street. Now at the Factory, the space is bigger and the crowds have increased. But the bargains remain: There are always drink specials and simple ways to avoid the cover. —Lonny Pugh
