A monthly mash-up of bootlegs and bastard pop

San Francisco's mash-up scene got so big it spilled over into LA in the form of a monthly dance party at Safari Sam's.

The jury is still out on mash-ups and the DJs who create them. Music snobs put mash-up DJs on par with cover bands; enthusiasts consider mixing two totally different songs and genres (like Madonna with Nirvana, or Eminem with Blondie) into an entirely new song a work of genius. There must be enough enthusiasts to outnumber the detractors in LA, because DJ Paul V., of Dragstrip 66 fame, now hosts mash-up show Smash Mix on Indie 103.1FM on Fridays and he's at the helm of Bootie LA, the sister club of Bootie SF. Joining him on decks at this monthly party are resident DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D. Now when you want to make a song request, you'll have to think of two wildly different tunes. Hey, it's fun to stump the DJ.—Alexandra Le Tellier
