Pershing SquareThe closest thing we have to Central Park ![]() It's been around since the 1860s, which in LA years might as well be the Jurassic period.Named after the famous World War I general, the park was revamped in 1994 to make it more user-friendly. As a gathering place for office workers, it's the closest thing LA has to a central square. The Spanish War memorial and statue of Beethoven give the public art to observe. The newer, more questionable artwork includes a purple waterfall and orange orbs circling a low fountain. In the summer, the park hosts a free concert series that starts in June and ends in late September; from mid-November to mid-January, a 4,500-square-foot ice skating rink is created. As part of Pershing Square's "LA Kings Downtown on Ice" celebration, the park hosts ice hockey clinics, "glide-in movie" screenings (which include a showing of—surprise, surprise—It's a Wonderful Life), Sunday-night swing music on Sundays, and Thursday-night concerts sponsored by Spaceland.
