There's no sign out front (unless you count the one that says "Cocktails") but that hasn't stopped anyone with a cool haircut and at least one item of vintage on their person from finding this former cop hangout.

On weeknights, The Short Stop (co-owned by Greg Dulli from the Afghan Whigs) is a fairly quiet neighborhood spot where work-worn Eastsiders relax at the small bar or candlelit tables flanking the walls of the dark, spacious main room. Invariably, Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" spills from the jukebox. On Friday and Saturday nights, the packed crowd is a mix of hipsters parading the latest ironic T-shirt and Westsiders (read: west of La Brea Avenue) out for a change of pace. Both groups enjoy a game room with Elvis pinball, old-school Ms. Pac-Man, pool, and a photo booth made famous by a New York Times article. The smoking area in the back, essentially a caged-in alley, has its own bleak charm.—Adam Jacobson
