After years of learning those Soul Train dance moves in privacy, it’s about time to stroll into this party to bust a move on the disco-ball lit floor – Don Cornelius would be proud

The lack of cover charge and pretentious-less environment aren’t the only things that bring in the funky crowd every Saturday at Jimmy’s Lounge.  Resident DJs Egon (Stones Throw Records) and Miles’ (Root Down, Breakestra) funk, soul, Afro-Latin beats have been congregating funky crowds for over 6 years.  People come to Funky Sole for one reason: to dance.

While there are the scenesters sporting their deep-v tees and the cabal of dressed-up clubbers, the mostly non-descript Hollywood crowd takes on a new form when they hit the dance floor.  The club reaches full capacity at around midnight – with the heterogeneous crowd grooving, often even awkwardly, like they’re from the funky 70’s.  When needing that breather from the floor or – in our case – feeling inadequate dancing next to that James Brown wanna-be, the patio is the place to slip away to rest the feet, sip that 5 dollar Bud, and marvel at the eclectic turnout against the backdrop of projected vintage 45s.   Cut Chemist is also known to  make surprise visits and jump on the turntables for exclusive impromptu sets.  – Josephine Vu
