Break it down party people, Laskey = L.A.'s Key. With a last name like that, Jenn Laskey was predestined to be an L.A. nightlife guru. The OC-bred, USC alum turned party promoter has just been appointed to the coveted position of Director of Special Events for 86, Hollywood's newest hotspot set to open this week. Busy running her own company, Red Light Promotions, and running all of 86's special events, Jenn found time to fit us into her busy schedule to give us the keys to her L.A. experience.
1.
When did you start promoting?I actually started promoting when I was 20 and still in college. The first event I did was a New Year’s Eve 2001 party at Moomba for Jordan Buky, who was the person who exposed to me what promoting was.
2.
When did you start promoting on your own?It was probably about 9 months after that. Jordan was totally my mentor, telling me who’s good, who’s bad, what to do and what not to do. He referred me to the owners of Ivar (now Façade) 2 months after it opened, when Ivar was one of the big hotspots. They gave me my first night and hired me to sub-promote Friday nights at Ivar.
3.
What parties are you promoting now?Tuesdays at Les Deux and mostly one off special events at clubs and restuarants AND creative offsite venues such as boutiques, salons, lofts, homes, etc.
4.
How has your new position as Special Events Director for 86 been different from running your own company, Red Light Promotions? It is different, first and foremost, because before I had the blessing or luxury of not having a boss for most of my life. For the first time, it’s someone else’s investment, someone else’s money, which is definitely different, but I think it’s good for me.
5.
We love 86 and everyone we know falls in love with it when they visit, what do you think it is that makes 86 so special? The main thing I like about it, and this is what I’ve conveyed to people, is that it’s an original 1917 building. The speakeasy, and the whole building, has such an amazing history to it. Inside the club, everything is either an original or has been replicated in a way that feels authentic to the art deco period.
6.
Besides 86, what has been your favorite venue to throw parties at?Right now it’s 86. I’m not lying, it’s actually true. But before that, it’s hard to say because it’s changed so many times. There was a time when Holly’s was my favorite spot because it’s small and I could do it myself. I still think Social is great. I don’t think I can say I have an overarching favorite because it has changed so much over time.
7.
What’s the best party you’ve ever been to in L.A.?That’s hard. Now, I’m hypercritical of everything so I rarely like anything lately. I used to absolutely loooove Wednesday nights at Las Palmas (now LAX). It was Bolthouse’s night back in like 2001-2003. DJ AM was the resident DJ and that was my absolute favorite weekly party in L.A., for sure.
8.
Where do you go out now when you’re not working?Besides the gym? My favorite place, right now to just go and hang out, would be S Bar. I really think it’s great and I’m impressed by their specialty drinks –my favorite drink there is the Death by Mango Daquiri.
9.
L.A. ladies love to lunch – where do you like to grab a nice midday meal?I’ll just give you a list of my faves because it’s just too hard to pick just one. I probably go to Joan's on Third the most, but I love La Brea bakery, too. I really like the whole casual, eat-by-yourself vibe. And now, I’m eating at Lift at least once a day.
10.
Dinner meetings are as much a part of your job as partying – what are you favorite places to dine on the job?Dan Tana’s is my favorite Italian restaurant, for sure, by far. I really love sushi so I’d have to say Koi or Katsuya, now that there’s one in Hollywood.
11.
What’s your favorite L.A. neighborhood?I’m very infatuated by the Miracle Mile area – I used to live there and it is, for sure, my favorite neighborhood. I’m always weirdly inspired by my neighborhood and I really love it – I’m dying to move back there. I love the architecture in that there because it’s all 20’s and 30’s. If you find the right block where every house is like that, it’s perfect.
12.
If today was your last day in L.A., how would you spend it?That’s so sad to think of! Well, definitely not planning an event! I would turn off my cell phones, grab a good lunch and dinner at the places I just told you about. And I’d probably go for a run in my old Miracle Mile neighborhood. Then, of course, I’d host my good-bye party. If it were today, it would most definitely be at 86.
