Situated on picturesque Mount Lee—overlooking one neighborhood, for which it stands—the 45-foot-high Hollywood Sign marks the entertainment capital of the world.

Built in 1923 as an advertisement for the Hollywoodland real estate development, the sign lost the "land" 25 years later and gained international cult status. And much like the allure of a crooked smile, the sign's jumbled appearance makes it all the more loveable. Tourists from every corner of the world scramble for the best view (and snapshot) of this golden-era moniker, which is probably the film industry's most recognizable image. Now considered a national landmark, the sign is under 24/7 web surveillance to deter overzealous visitors and vandals from getting too close. Some of the best views are through the Babylon Court Archway at the Hollywood & Highland Complex and at the Charlie Turner trailhead by Griffith Park Observatory.
