Leo Carrillo State Beach

Activities for the kids, From Here to Eternity for the adults

Sycamores, tide pools, reefs and coastal caves: This is beaching Malibu-style.

The beach is named after the actor who played Pancho on TV's "Cicso Kid," but the moniker honors not his on-screen achievements but his years of work on the California Beach and Parks commission. With a mile and a half of sand for swimming and/or ball-throwing and/or sheer laziness, the park also contains campsites, hiking trails, restrooms, showers and picnic areas. (Seeking out a table should solve the sand-in-the-sandwich problem.) And if you can't seem to cut the laptop umbilical cord, the park offers WiFi service (though getting sand out of a keyboard is probably just about as fun as a third-degree sunburn). In the summer, the park hosts organized activities for children so mom and dad can sneak away to tackle that From Here to Eternity reimagining. —Lonny Pugh
