The American Cinematheque, quite possibly responsible for getting more good films onscreen than all the Burbank studios combined, showcases old and modern classics at this Santa Monica outpost.

Long at home in Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre—scheduling cinematic tributes, festivals and screenings—the Cinematheque was shrouded in mystery for those too petrified to drive east of the 405. But in January 2004, Montana Avenue's Aero Theatre became a sister theater to the Egyptian, giving Westside cinephiles reason to rejoice. The theater, which was built in 1939, retains its vintage charm while keeping up with the 21st century. After being acquired by the Cinematheque, the Aero was brought up to technological par with a new sound system, new projection, enhanced acoustics and—yes, popcorn fiends—a renovated concession stand. Now, everything from the latest Sofia Coppola film to a new print of Monty Python and The Holy Grail has a home.
