Bergamot StationA tricked out-train station with galleries galore ![]() Once a trolley station, this unique space has been transformed into an arts complex housing more than 30 galleries, ten shops and a cafe.Bergamot Station is a campus-like art-gallery complex with an old industrial feel—thanks to the fact the complex used to be a stopoff for Red Line trolleys back in the 1870s. Individual galleries are housed in small spaces flanking a large parking lot in the center of the compound. The parking lot centerpiece might not be the most picturesque, but does prove useful after deciding an oversized metal deer would be a stunning living-room addition. And much like the tenants of other famed LA compounds (Melrose Place? Playboy Mansion?), the residents of Bergamot Station come from all walks of life. In addition to galleries, the site houses architects, graphic designers, ultrahip hair salon Frank.Studio (apple martinis are served, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst prints grace the walls) and the Los Angeles Ballet. But the real lure here is the art. Santa Monica Museum of Art, Suzanne Felsen, Rose Gallery (showcasers of William Eggleston and Dorothea Lange photographs), and the Gallery of Functional Art (peddlers of bicycle-part chairs and fruit-shaped fiberglass tables) are just a few of the many art spaces at the station.—Elisa Jacobs![]()
