Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

You like my building, you really like my building!

A lot of behind-the-scenes business takes place here, but there are always events for the public at the Academy, whether it’s exhibits of foreign film posters, collections of W.C. Fields memorabilia, or screenings of restored early talkies.

For more than 30 years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has called this glass building home. It houses several of the organization's key departments (press!) as well as the state-of-the-art Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the Academy Little Theater and the Grand Lobby and Fourth Floor galleries. The public is welcome to visit the theaters screening films and the galleries showcasing art and artifacts. Naturally, the theater also hosts a slew of Oscar-related events. Oscar-nominated live action and nominated short films screen here, as do clips of the films nominated for Best Foreign Language film. Most screenings are relatively cheap (or free), and are often accompanied by discussions. The galleries exhibit old film posters, production stills, behind-the-scenes photographs, scripts, costume sketches and all other kinds of historic movie paraphernalia. The Academy Board of Governors holds the majority of its meetings in the building, as do most of the numerous committees and sub-committees that oversee the Academy's activities and interests—unlike the screenings and exhibitions, however, those are not open to the public.
