Artcore Brewery Annex

Hardcore art

L.A. Artcore dares to show bold contemporary art and is only beholden to its own standards. That's the beauty of being a nonprofit--even if the electricity bill doesn't get paid.

Artcore presents exhibitions at its two gallery sites (the other being the Union Center for the Arts) and participates in international exchange shows with artists from Munich, Berlin, Paris, Seoul, Kitakyushu and Fukuoka. The galleries do not have permanent collections but exhibits rotate out each month.

The Brewery Annex is located in the former Pabst Blue Ribbon building. (PBR Me ASAP!) Sculptor/installation artist Otto Youngers made his LA debut at the Brewery with his sculptures made of reclaimed wood. One piece titled "God's army or welcome home we've come to save you" has three human-like figures that morph into different shapes. A fourth figure is suspended above; they are all life-size or bigger. Contemporary? Experimental? Fits the bill.

With a focus on community, the nonprofit provides art workshops, holds an annual award benefit and opens dialogue between artists and their community. Artcore helps artists to reach out to their surroundings and ask, "Won't you be my neighbor?"
