At this studio, the emphasis is on environmentally and spiritually friendly yoga. (Translation: a space made out of recycled building materials and earthy in-class tunes that would make Brian Eno proud.)

Don't expect power yoga, PowerBars or even power pop at this Santa Monica studio, because it's not here. What is here? Sustainable Brazilian wood floors, light green walls the color of green-tea mochi, frosted glass, stone tiles, a bathroom equipped with a shower, a hot-tea station, massage rooms, Pilates equipment and a store peddling clothes and products from Prana, Lululemon, Be Present and Manduka. The studio was designed by Peter Sterios, an architect, yoga teacher and the founder of Manduka, who make extra sticky and ecologically minded yoga mats. Trüyoga is a testament to green building practices: There's sustainable wood flooring, countertops made from recycled newspaper pulp, plant-derived ceiling paneling and low-emission paint on the walls. An opponent of the power-yoga craze (fast-paced yoga focused more on toning butts than freeing minds), Sterios champions a Hatha-blend yoga practice that takes the time to gently warm up before moving on to more rigorous poses. Students may not leave the studio dripping with sweat, but the asanas, or poses, are creative enough that yogis feel the burn the morning after. —Elisa Jacobs
