To the delight of butterfly chasers, the pavilion has reemerged for the ninth year on the South Lawn of the Natural History Museum.

Every year this enclosed butterfly garden opens to the public from spring and through Labor Day. In the pavilion, visitors can walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies and moths, including more than 30 species of flying insects like giant swallowtails, American painted ladies and California dogfaces. (Before cracking some kind of ugly joke, be aware that the dogface is California's state butterfly.) Besides learning about the life cycles, defense mechanisms, environments and migratory patterns of the bugs, guests observe caterpillars feeding on leaves, watch butterflies suck nectar and learn which plants to cultivate in a garden in order to attract a butterfly population at home. Want to get surrounded by a cloud of butterflies? The museum suggests wearing bright colors and strong-smelling perfume.
