Ivan Kane's "Royal Jelly"

On January 03, 2007

Slippery burlesque fun

Nightlife imagineer Ivan Kane must have watched a lot of old MTV videos while creating the next big thing in burlesque. "Royal Jelly" infuses his club, Forty Deuce, with a highly choreographed show with hair-metal debauchery that manages to keep classy—in a Bettie Page sort of way.

Kane's elite squad of scintillating super-gymnasts swing from ropes, scale ceiling beams and somehow avoid toppling over while dancing to Steven Tyler in four-inch heels. From the naughty-schoolgirl outfits worn during "Hot for Teacher" to the homoerotic guitar action in "Back in Black," "Royal Jelly" embodies rock-'n-roll excess at its finest. The show even scores patriotic points for opening with an electrifying version of the national anthem, complete with star-spangled mammaries and an irreverent but strangely endearing American flag behind a white-beaded curtain. Just remember earplugs: If there's anything we learned from the '80s, it's that you need protection while partying like a rock star.—Jon Sattler
