This land is your land, this land is my land and we can get good picture of it at the Center for Land Use Interpretation.

Part research center and part museum, the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) digs into the relationship between nature and man by examining the pockmarks mankind creates on the Earth's surface. Whether it's aerial views of sprawling highways or close-ups of livestock on farmland, this nonprofit organization exposes our changing landscapes through exhibits, public bus tours and field trips; the center also sends a quarterly newsletter titled "Lay of the Land" and maintains a nationwide database of land use. Search for radioactive sites across America (and be prepared to be surprised by the results). Visitors should skip the small bookstore unless they have a yearning to get in-depth on nuclear "proving" grounds in Nevada or Antarctica's first highway; although there are a few tchotchkes that might be worth looking at like CLUI T-shirts and mugs. —Mai Dinh
