George Billis Gallery

A multitasking bastion of artistry

The Los Angeles outpost of a New York gallery, this two-room space (with a long hallway providing additional hanging spots) shows several artists at a time.

The gallery shows work in a variety of media by artists from all over, typically three at a time, and patrons will sense an aesthetic thread running through it all. Among the artists represented here are Ke-Sook Lee, whose fragile, web-like fabric installations are both graceful and ephemeral; abstract painter Richard Orient, who creates painted waveforms that undulate with gentle bursts of bright color; Vezna Gottwald, a California-based artist whose abstract works are reminiscent of Paul Cezanne’s cubist phase and Mark Rothko’s color-block canvases; Josh Keyes, a contemporary surrealist whose work often reflects environmental issues like deforestation and unbridled urban sprawl; and Erika Kohr, who fashions voluminous clothing forms out of hand-blown and sculpted glass.
