Valley natives don't have to scorch just because they're miles away from the beach.

Hansen Dam Aquatic Center, located 25 minutes from Downtown LA, features two lakes, water slides, kayaking, paddle boats and fishing. (The swimming lake's water is filtered and chlorinated, so it's best to pee in the bathrooms.) At the recreational lake, visitors fish for free, but fishermen 16 and older must have a valid fishing license. During September, the center hosts an annual catfish-catching derby; in December, visitors can sign up for the float-tube derby. Plentiful dry-land activities include hiking and horseback-riding, and picnickers are welcome to bring their own propane grills for cookouts. —Mai Dinh
