Designed as a publicity stunt in the late 1950s, the Walk of Fame is now the most famous stretch of cement in the world. With more than 2,300 brass stars embedded in pink and charcoal terrazzo, the Walk welcomes more than a million visitors annually in its homage to celebrities from Lassie to Mike Myers.

The first star was awarded to Joanne Woodward (Paul Newman's wife) back in 1960 and Hollywood hasn't stopped doling out pieces of sidewalk since. An average of 20 new celebrities are honored every year with public ceremonies. Some of the recent (and varied) inductees include Hilary Swank, Bruce Willis, Winnie The Pooh, Queen Latifah, Motley Crue, Destiny's Child, Vanessa Williams and Judge Judy. To get a star on the walk of the fame, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce must receive a nomination from an outside sponsor who has the written consent of the nominee. But immortalization does not come cheap: honorees must pony up $15,000 for the star's installation, ceremony and lifetime maintenance. Be sure not to trip over the dedicated fans who informally look after their favorite celebs' stars by cleaning them and leaving flowers, candles and other tokens of affection.
