Tastemakers for the hip, Tara Sandroni Hirshberg and Kristin Rey moved their gallery from Venice to Culver City in 2004 to bring the then-simmering hype about the La Cienega scene to a boil.

Sandroni.Rey’s current white box, designed by Linda Taalman and Allen Koch (who collaborated with Robert Irwin to build contemporary-art Mecca Dia:Beacon), features a one-room exhibition space, naturally lit by a row of ingeniously tucked-away skylights. Among the artists who have taken advantage of the space are contemporary gothic mastermind Sue de Beer, lush painters Hernan Bas and John White Cerasulo, and Iona Rozeal Brown, whose drawings are mash-ups of contemporary hip-hop and classic Japanese Edo stylization. Due to an ever-expanding program, the gallery recently supplemented its main space with a video-viewing space, housed in a sealed, carpeted shipping container, just outside the double-door entrance. —Melissa Lo
