A coastal canyon hike through a dense canopy of oak and sycamore trees is a sensual treat for any jaded city dweller.

A former home to the Chumash tribe, the area was once used for shelter and cattle grazing. Today, Solstice Canyon serves as a break from the nearby Malibu scene. The Solstice Canyon Trail is paved and not too difficult, so it's a popular destination for families, runners, bikers and dog walkers. The stream-adjacent trail is bordered by lush, green foliage, making for a pleasant, shaded stroll, fast-paced walk or full-on run. About a mile in, hikers will encounter the Tropical Terrace, which is home to bamboo and birds of paradise as well as the trail's "ruins." The ruins are made up of the Roberts' Home, an acclaimed modernist residence designed by Paul Williams that burned down in 1982. Feel free to poke around the charred remains of the house—the fireplace, oven, dishwasher and bathtub still remain. Just beyond the ruins is a rather impressive waterfall. Those who are feeling adventurous can traverse up the fall by climbing among the rocks, but for those who decide to go that route—excuse us while we channel your mother—please be careful! —Elisa Jacobs
