Another émigré from the Grove Farmer's Market, Kokomo Café has finally settled into its new digs on tony Beverly Blvd., providing a breath of fresh, delicious air to an otherwise stuffy stretch of street.
The restaurant is decorated with mid-century modern flair, sporting purple-and-lavender striped walls, cubic lighting fixtures, and space-agey single-piece chairs out on the sidewalk.
Though Kokomo only serves breakfast and lunch, the menu is several pages long and contains everything from huge fluffy omelettes and gigantic breakfast burritos to homemade soups, a plethora of salads, over 20 sandwiches, and burgers, not to mention the assorted juices, smoothies and Elixir teas. Some standouts on the menu include the catfish and eggs accented with cayenne pepper, the red turkey hash with shredded potatoes and beets topped with parmesan, and the Swiss cheese pancakes.
For lunch, try the lime curry chicken salad with mango chutney, yellow raisins and cashews. The Napa Valley sandwich with balsamic glaze and served with gruyere, smoked bacon, red onion and basil aioli on rustic ciabatta is also delicious.
The menu here is as good as any brunch spot in LA, but the friendly and attentive staff, the cheerful color palette, and easy outdoor seating set it apart from the pack.
