Though only open for a short time, Recess has already become a neighborhood favorite in Glendale, with lines for breakfast and lunch lasting long into the afternoon. That is probably because of Chef Sevan Azarian's simple, hearty menu, the extremely friendly staff, and the fact that there's not much competition on this barren stretch of Brand Blvd.
This establishment is part café, part gourmet food store, with little goodies like handmade pasta, artisanal olive oil and fancy gourmet sodas going for sale next to pre-packaged salads and kettle-fried potato chips.
For breakfast, try the buttermilk waffles with maple syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream and seasonal fruits. The Eggs Benny add a lemon-thyme hollandaise to your traditional Benedict, while those with lighter appetites can go for the fruit and homemade granola parfait with yogurt.
The lunch menu includes a variety of salads, like the one with luscious slices of ahi tuna, mixed greens, mango, tear-drop tomatoes, avocado and grapefruit in a ponzu-mustard aioli dressing, or a zesty Teacher's Pet salad with arugla, parmigiano reggiano, and lemon vinaigrette. The generous sandwiches include the Pig Headed with Italian prosciutto, mozzarella, olive oil and balsamic; and the Tree Hugger with tomatoes, provolone, alfalfa sprouts, roasted red and yellow peppers, avocado, black olive tapenade, olive oil and balsamic. All come served on your choice of ciabatta, baguette or panini, and the kitchen will make any meal to order from the selection of local, organic ingredients based on your preferences.
There are also a few small pizzas including the meat-lover's "Detention" with prosciutto, soppressata salami and Canadian bacon, or the chef's daily inspiration, the "Kaleidoscope."
On your way out, pick up fresh-baked desserts like praline bars, macaroons, and red velvet cake to help you get through those long afternoon hours back at work.
