Tucked into the Laemmle Sunset 5 complex on Sunset, there's a sparkling new restaurant with happy tones of orange and green beckoning moviegoers and gym boys from the upstairs Crunch to its sustainable-wood tables and heart-healthy, "plant-based" menu. It's called the Veggie Grill, and this location is its fourth, and the first one in central L.A.
Unlike the experience at most vegetarian restaurants though, no one here will lecture you about your impact on the environment or how red meat will eventually kill your colon. The staff will patiently explain the ingredients in every sandwich, wrap, salad and soup, and practically applaud when you make your final choice.
The All Hail Kale salad is full of folic acid goodness, and comes in a distinctive ginger-papaya vinaigrette with agave-roasted walnuts. The sandwiches and wraps bring an element of comfort food to the menu with choices like the Santa Fe Crispy Chickin' which is, miracle of miracles, actually crispy and comes on a whole wheat bun with avocado, tomato, and guilt-free southwestern spiced vegan mayo. The Chickin' Caesar wrap comes with avocado, corn salsa, and chipotle ranch, which you can also get as the dressing on the popular Chop-Chop Chef salad with romaine, Chickin', quinoa, roasted corn salsa and tomatoes.
Since you've been so healthy, why skip desserts like the moist carrot cake, a deep dark chocolate pudding, or just a huge vegan chocolate-chip cookie? If only vegetables had been prepared like this when we were kids, we might actually have learned to love them.
