Anyone who grew up in the 90s had some form of exposure to The Big Lebowski. Joel and Ethan Coen's 1998 comedy on L.A. slackerdom is often cited as the first cult classic of the Internet Era, while unwittingly entering several idiosyncratic phrases ("Donny, you're out of your element!" and "I don't roll on shabbos", to name a few), into the pop-cultural canon. Heck, even Jeff Bridges has cited The Dude as one of his all-time favorite roles. So it makes perfect sense that a funny guy like The Dude would be paired up with the even funnier Minnesotans (dontcha know) of 1996's Fargo for a drink-along double feature at the Downtown Independent. Aside from the fact that the cinematic dynamos, The Coen Bros., wrote and directed both movies, Fargo and The Big Lebowski are essentially pitch black comedies disguised as crime movies, with a little bit of Hitchcockian suspense thrown in for good measure. Huh? Just head over to the Downtown Independent this weekend and see for yourself if you don't believe me. The Dude abides!
