Von DutchPass the dutchy on the left-hand side ![]()
You can't get through three pages of In Touch without seeing an action shot of Britney or Justin or Ashton wearing a Von Dutch trucker cap. In LA, the caps are as ubiquitous as smog. Now there's a VD store on the Third Street Promenade.
Most teens will be surprised to learn that Von Dutch is the nickname of founder Kenny Howard, the father of the 1960s' "kustom car" craze. Inside the Third Street store, though, the "kustomized" motorcycle near the corrugated-steel dressing rooms is the only indication that the man who created painted flames on cars is also the man who painted his name across miniskirted asses all over town. (The solitary rebel died in 1992 and his business-wise daughters sold the rights to his name in 1996.) With its exposed-brick wall, open-beam ceiling and blaring rock music, the store is home planet for fans of the brand: Up for grabs are jeans, leather jackets, tank tops, belts, robes, T-shirts, visors, luggage and--of course--the infamous trucker hats. (Curious, we touched one--and saw an $85 price tag! Who knew?) The variety of colors and styles is enough for you to see double (dutch).
