An axe through the forehead. Hellraiser pin-cushion masks. Gruesome, unexplainable messes. Makeup artists at this special FX makeup haven can transform mere mortals into movie-style monsters.

Makeup artist Maurice Stein made Hollywood magic for more than 25 years. When he retired, the old guy who couldn't stay put opened a family-run special effectsmakeup and beauty-supply store. Cinema Secrets became an Industry favorite, expanding with its own product line and theatrical-quality costumes. The store sells masks, wigs, makeup and props year-round for professional use by the studios and for questionable use by regular Joes with macabre sensibilities. Since Stein still couldn't get fake blood out of his blood, he also teaches on-site makeup classes and seminars to a new generation of monster-makers (including his sons). Every Halloween season, the Steins Michael and Danny perform monster makeovers that look one pea-soup projectile away from The Exorcist. Customers can bring pictures to help create a specific look and no appointment is necessary.—Mai Dinh
