Carol Young thinks of her boutique, which she recently moved from Echo Park to Los Feliz, as a live design test lab.

Through the back door of the store is a snapshot of Young's workspace where she whips up experimental new garments to test in the store (her line is sold in boutiques across the country) or rebuild popular pieces in custom fabrics and sizes for clients. When she gets it right, Young's Undesigned clothes are thoughtfully artistic with continued relevance. We would have never guessed that the fresh convertible tube skirt and dress with asymmetrical pleats was an original design from 3 years ago. Her clients, which range from film industry professionals, curators, academics to architects—her husband is an architect, and she sells laser-cut accessories designed by an architect friend—know a good thing when they try it on and often request several of the same garment in different colors and fabrics. Young makes a point to use environmentally friendly fabrics as well, such as bamboo, recycled cotton and foamy soft fleece made from recycled bottle caps. We had our eye on some of the more technological and practical fabrics like a cape treated with a sharp basket weave pleat and a cowl neck top made with a breathable and wrinkle-free fabric used for swimwear.—Rhea Cortado
