What started as a Los Feliz whim in 1996 has grown into an anchor store on West Third Street, and a perfect place to get a conversation-starter gift.

If it ain't made of plastic, you ain't finding it in here. Plastica is big on childlike, ergonomic design. The store looks partly like a playpen, with inflatable Rody rocking horses and green kids' chairs stuck to the wall, and part uber-cool-guy apartment—the kind of guy who somehow makes his comic-book collection desirable. Leaving the plastic on the couch is usually considered tacky, but here, the plastic rugs, storage bins and, Marimekko-print trays make the durable material look stylish and functional. Plus, plastic goodies like the frog-eyed rain boots, Bilibo rocking chairs for kids and kickballs are nearly indestructible. The store sells a lot of plastic fashion totes, making carrying purchases home easier, and a small collection of non-plastic items like stationary, Ugly Doll plush toys and T-shirts. However, if a comfortable plastic T-shirt is ever invented, Plastica will be the place to find it.
