Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a far cry from LA's gilded, fast-paced shopping destinations. Here are truly unique shops, many of which offer handmade creations by their owners. The prices are not as inexpensive as you might expect, but it's certainly a lot less pretentious than, say, Robertson Boulevard. —Enid Portuguez

Fashionable Stops

Though shorts and flip-flops are de rigueur on this street, these boutiques house surprisingly hip, fashion-forward finds.

1.

Collage

Carrying Vivienne Westwood, Corpus and Grey Ant, Collage gives Abbot Kinney shoppers a respite from beachwear and the breezy Boho look.

2.

ecookie

Unapologetically girly, Ecookie's precious fashions can make any woman's Flirt-o-Meter exceed expectations.

3.

The Stronghold

Pre-World War II, Charlie Chaplin donned a pair of Strongholds. In the twilight of Dubya's reign, the popular denim line from 1895 is now a cottage industry whipping out jeans right on Abbot Kinney.

4.

Madley

Coryn Madley's fashion fiefdom is like a real-life fairy tale.

5.

Heist

Former investment banker Nilou Ghodsi—a confessed shopaholic—found a way to quench her insatiable appetite for "the perfect piece." She opened her own boutique.

Home Sweet Home

From antiques to exotic furnishings, the design finds at these shops are as eclectic as the boulevard's denizens.

1.

Bountiful

For the French countryman or woman in us all, this store offers antique furniture that's tre magnifique!

2.

Rose

Small in comparison to other overflowing home décor shops on the block, Rose trumps most neighbors with its meticulously curated selection of extraordinary objects.

3.

Digs

With its eclectic mix of contemporary Asian and European home furnishings, this shop offers canvas art prints, chairs, tables and even soaps and lotions.

4.

Tortoise

This gallery/store sells Japanese arts and gifts that serve both form and function. How yin and yang of them.

Extras, Extras

After scouring the boutiques above for an outfit, hit up these accessorizing gems.

1.

Dewey

Haughty yet quite hot, Dewey supplies the swankiest footwear not fit for a trek on the beach.

2.

Nagual Jewelry & Accessories

Surf dude-turned-jewelry designer Joseph Bortoli is riding a wave of good fortune with his design house Nagual, which means "shaman" in Spanish.

3.

Daisy Arts

This Italian small leather goods shop has stuff you never knew you needed.

4.

Sunya Currie Collection

This global market sells spicy accessories for your home, body and soul.

Odds and Ends

Need a gift for that artistic/bohemian/cultured friend? Try these unique boutiques.

1.

Equator Books

With a roll-up garage door entrance wide enough for a fleet of cars, this rare-books shop is a breath of fresh air.

2.

Strange Invisible Perfumes

Not at all like a department-store perfume counter, Strange Invisible Perfumes is like scent-making as envisioned by Willy Wonka.

3.

Ananda

Global fashions, hip trends and even affordable haircuts make this boutique a one-stop shop for urban hippies.

4.

Firefly

Buzzing with little things shoppers don't really need but can't help buying, this boutique is where the "gifts" often end up not making it to their intended destination.

Check out Altered Space! A newer store with awesome jewelry and art. Loving Abbot Kinney!
