Nestled in Kendall Alley just off Union Avenue in Old Town Pasadena is eyebrow shaping salon BrauHaus. Owner Zoey Van Jones, known as the Eyebrow Einstein, holds an MFA in one hand, her Tweezerman's in the other and her sights on raising eyebrows to new, artistic heights.

At the root of BrauHaus is Zoey Van Jones’ (a former MAC makeup artist) approach to eyebrow shaping is a philosophy plucked from her days of studying the Bauhaus movement as a grad student. Like Bauhaus, the idea at BrauHaus is “form follows function,” meaning that Van Jones uses each individuals natural eyebrow shape to guide her tweezers. "There is a brow that was there when we were born, before we messed around with them, which is quite beautiful. They can be coaxed back into existence in the proper hands," says Van Jones, who is often booked out a month in advance. She’s worth the wait. Once at her station in the loft-like, mid-century modern space Van Jones not only maximizes each brow's perfect shape, she also teaches every customer the ins-and-outs as she goes: where to fill, how to comb and maintain. Along with eyebrow waxing, starting at $40, BrauHaus also offers makeup application and a variety of body waxings, including the most pain-free bikini wax around. Resident waxer Lucchese Luchsinger proves that isn't an oxymoron and humanely uses a  brilliant numbing spray (and even a glass of wine) before the process begins. The most painful thing about it—mostly for first-timers—is being asked to get on all fours, a passing discomfort due to Luchsinger's mellow, professional vibe.  —Lyndsey Saul
