Chanel

The redesigned Beverly Hills Chanel flagship merges the house’s eternally modern black-and-white ethic with the camellia-loving history of Miss Coco herself.

Inside what appears to be a giant Chanel No. 5 perfume box (the exterior was inspired by the famous fragrance’s packaging) all things Coco imbibe every square inch of the store on Rodeo Drive. Expect to be greeted by friendly, but not overly-friendly salespeople before making a bee line towards the double c-emblazoned ( and notoriously enviable) bag collection of quilted leather goodness, located straight ahead. Continue on to find cosmetics in the back, and a small gold-hued enclave that displays utterly mouthwatering leather goods. Up the soft pink-and-white signature Chanel bouclé-lined stairs, find the ready-to-wear collection...and shoes, lots of shoes. On the stairway wall, video art is projected and spliced with runway footage. If you’re feeling indulgent, take the elevator (because nobody really walks in L.A. if they can help it)—but be ready for an overdose of Mlle. Coco’s fave flower, the camellia, as shellacked décopaged panels line the interior. Contemporary art made especially for the store lines the walls, all of which is based on Chanel iconography resulting in a plethora of pearls. In fact, an illuminated, 105-foot glass version of Coco Chanel’s infamous strand was hand-blown out of Murano glass, lined with gold leaf and installed in the upstairs entrance-side window. Downstairs the jewelry/watch display was designed to resemble Coco's Parisian apartment, replete with fireplace, seating area and a marble Venus torso seized from her mantle and newly covered in handmade porcelain camellias—an ode to everything feminine and, of course, Chanel.
