Johnny Cupcakes

Tee(s) and (cup)cakes, not for cream puffs

Before rising to success, Johnny Cupcakes founder Johnny Earle started selling his T-shirts at hardcore shows in Boston. Now, seven years later Earle has gone from having a handful line up in a parking lot to buy tees out of his trunk to commanding a worldwide cult following, many of whom flew across the county just to grab a few limited editions at the opening of his L.A. shop.

Adorable may be the only word that can adequately describe Johnny Cupcakes' second location (first on the West Coast). First, let it be known that it is not a bakery—a common mistake made by the casual passerby-er and a confusion not cleared up by the over-sized baking utensils hanging in the window. And the bakery-theme doesn't stop there. Inside, three rows of pastel enameled custom oven doors are installed on the west wall of the store—the doors open at intervals and out puffs a cloud of special effects steam that we swear smells like baking goodies. A giant mint colored oven-facade acts as the doorway to the stockroom and a stove top, complete with custom iron grates with the J.C. symbol molded in the center, marks the cash register. Hand cut black-and-white checkered tiles compliment the kitchen theme, along with giant refrigerators with clear glass doors that display the limited edition T-shirts (about $38) on trays as though they were pastries. Our favorites: an outline of the state of California with a little cupcakes-and-cross bones marking Johnny Cupcakes' presence in L.A. and the blue elephants blowing tiny cupcakes out of their trunks printed on sexy boy briefs for the sweet price of $12. The cuteness doesn't stop there, purchases are placed on trays before being wrapped up in black cardboard "take out" boxes (similar to one you'd get guess where) in lieu of regular bags. Little treats come in the boxes too—ours had a little Johnny Cupcakes mint and a postcard. How sweet!  —Lyndsey Saul
