If variety is the spice of life, then the stores along La Brea Avenue are both savory and sweet. Offering a unique selection of high fashion, vintage, streetwear and home décor, the street would rival more celebrated shopping thoroughfares like Robertson Boulevard or Melrose Heights if the shops weren't so far apart. —Enid Portuguez

Delicious Designers

These scrumptious shops carry the most coveted fashion labels east of Rodeo and Melrose Heights.

1.

Iconology

The store was one of two in LA to carry Karl Lagerfeld's one-off collection last year; current finds include looks from Behnaz Sarafpour, Jill Stuart and Rory Beca.

2.

Presse

Presse's selection of designs by Vogue darlings Doo.Ri, Proenza Schouler and Vera Wang may be the reason why the magazine recently devoted a spread to its owners. Hey, if it's good enough for Anna Wintour…

Savory Streetwear

From sneakers worth salivating over to delectable denim, these shops make streetwear a little more stylish.

1.

Union

No wonder this shop is frequented by LA's population of DJs—the T-shirts are wrapped and displayed like records in a crate.

2.

Undefeated--La Brea

This definitive sneaker store is often the first stop for limited edition, hard-to-find kicks. Cool points were also earned with a cameo on last season's "Entourage."

3.

Volcom

Whether you get your thrills from a skateboard, snowboard or surfboard, this quintessentially California brand in streetwear has an outfit for you.

4.

World Denim Bar

You're not a true Angeleno unless you have at least one pair of premium jeans in your closet. If you don't, World Denim Bar has a couple of hundred to choose from.

Tasty Trends

Need an outfit to show off at Area or Les Deux? Try these boutiques for the latest trends to get you past those velvet ropes.

1.

Yellow

This shop's eclectic mix of high and low, vintage and new make it a go-to stop for celeb stylists and Hollywood wardrobe scouts.

2.

Publik Park

Literally a shopper's playground, this new store features faux foliage, Astroturf and dressy-casual looks for men and women from up-and-coming designers like Bread and Butter and Sretsis.

3.

Sugar on La Brea

The feminine dresses and tops by Jak and Rae, Petro Zillia and Bianca Nero aren't the only things sweet at this unabashedly girly boutique. A platter of homemade cupcakes awaits every shopper who walks through the doors.

4.

J. Ransom

Though this shop also carries women's clothing, it’s the men's selection that's more prolific. Find club-ready looks from Morphine Generation, Genetic Denim and Howe.

Voracious Vintage

Secondhand ain't so bad at these proven vintage establishments.

1.

The Way We Wore

Owner Doris Raymond's keen eye for pristine pieces makes this a must-stop shop for vintage lovers. Stylists and designers are also known to drop in to view Raymond's archived library for inspiration.

2.

American Rag

The vintage pieces here are so well maintained and merchandised that they blend in well with the store's non-vintage items despite having their own section.

3.

Jet Rag

Further north from most of the boutiques mentioned here, Jet Rag is especially worth visiting on Sundays, when goods are sold for $1 in the front parking lot.

4.

Jack's Eyewear

If you can't find a vintage pair of Persols, Ray-Bans or Casels that suit your liking, owner Jack Berstein will bust out his monocle to help you.

Hearty Home Decor and Gifts

There are enough shops specializing in home décor and furnishings on La Brea warrant their own guide, so we'll be doing one soon. But here are a few favorites, plus some notable stationery and gift shops.

1.

Maison Midi

After perusing the frocks at sister stores American Rag and World Denim Bar, swing over to Maison Midi, where the dining sets scream French and the furniture scream "Do Not Sit."

2.

Barclay Butera

International finds abound at this well-known furniture showroom. The price tags, however, are just as costly as a trip to another country.

3.

Algabar

Candles, soaps and a gourmet tasting bar are some of the goodies found at Algabar. Its most precious commodities, however, are the teas and the sets to pour them in.

4.

Dear John

Aside from the beautiful stationery and antique gifts, Dear John also has a functioning, appointment-only hair salon in the back.

5.

Pulp

If you think stationery consists of just pieces of paper and envelopes, step into Pulp and be proven otherwise.
