Martin Margiela doesn't put labels in his clothing. But drive by his second U.S. brand store in Beverly Hills, Maison Martin Margiela, and the avant-garde name he’s made for himself—figuratively speaking—is all over it. Almost blindingly so.

We mean this literally, since the entire outside of the square building is covered in silver sequins. And the innovation doesn't stop there. Just past the front doors, Margiela's leather boots, heels and cleft-toed ballet flats sit on a tiered display constructed out of 6,500 stacked champagne flutes. White carpet lines the floor and dirty footprints have been purposefully tread all over it. Once a church, to the right, the two doors that led to what was the chapel remain and still lead to something that Margiela surely considers holy—a recreation of his Paris showroom. This is where the bulk of his mens and womens collection lives, between walls covered with life-sized photographs of the doors, stucco and cornicing from the Paris location (even the distressed ‘wood’ floor is actually a photograph). Racks line the perimeter showcasing Margiela’s current collection, which consists of multi-functional pieces in grays, blacks and browns; we saw sweaters with removable dickies and the four-arm cardigan (creativity is encouraged when figuring out how to wear this one), plus dresses and jackets inspired by geometry—shoulders and sleeves that make perfect boxes and puffy backs that pop out into spheres. But, the real worship-worthy items are the one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces. A pair of web-like thigh-high boots sewn from pieces of vintage shoes and an $11,000 chain mail-esque shirt made from vintage rings linked together, are handmade by Margiela and left us singing his praises.  —Lyndsey Saul
