Resting atop a bustling Chinatown bakery resides Ooga Booga—a mishmash of a shop, chock full of eccentric treasures. Owner Wendy Yao keeps the blonde wood interior stocked with goods she handpicks.

Inspired by her after school hangouts of yesteryear, Yao opened the boutique-cum-gathering spot in 2004. Now Ooga Booga has become an indie-beacon for local designers and bands—shows are often staged on the shop’s balcony.  Inside, shelves hold ‘zines by the likes of Frances Stark and prints by Bjorn Copeland.  Stacked on the tables are oodles of EPs, CDs and LPs, including selections from artists like Acid Brass, Brian Degraw, and even 7’’s from Octis and Finally Punk.  The fashionably minded will rejoice over Yao’s international mix of labels.  Coveted Mociun linen frocks ($295) hang alongside limited edition Slow and Steady Wins the Race tuxedo tees ($100).  Her finely edited selection of Opening Ceremony stash goes quick, so grab it while it’s there.  Ooga Booga is also a haven for gifting the typically impossible to please.  We love Mended Veil’s handmade 'Nine Planets Necklace' and illustrator Leif Goldberg’s postcard set ($7).  Wondering where the shop’s name fits into all of this?  It was initially the name of a friend’s band, but trickled down to Yao instead.  She attributes “ooga booga” as being man’s first words.  We’ll take that over typical L.A.-speak any day. –Heather Rabkin
