The Surreal LifeA retrospective of fashion photog Melvin Sokolsky's surreal body of work ![]() Fashion photographer (and L.A. resident) Melvin Sokolsky joined the staff of Harper's Bazaar at the tender age of 21—a smart move on Bazaar's part considering Sokolsky went on to win 25 Clio Awards (a big time honor in the world of advertising). Always atypical, Sokolsky's fashion spreads channel the surreal by visually experimenting with scale, spatial relations, and even the laws of gravity. Think models floating above city streets à la Glinda, encased in glass bubbles and over-sized furniture conjuring wonderlands of this-side-will-make-you-grow-shorter. Then remember that these are commercial images, not fine art. Something apparently irrelevant to Sokolsky. "Really, I'm only interested in photography as a tool for exploring and visualizing psychological and emotional conditions." Spoken like a true artiste. Put those words to the test September 4–October 11, as Fahey/Klein Gallery will be exhibiting both Sokolsky's popular and never-before-seen prints from the 1960s to now. Stop by opening night, September 4 from 7-9PM and pre-order a limited edition Melvin Sokolsky book entitled Archive—the first 150 copies come with an original signed print. At Fahey/Klein, 118 N. La Brea Ave., L.A.
