Sunset Tower Hotel

The former Argyle looks ahead by embracing the past

From its perch on the Sunset Strip, this Art Deco landmark designed by Leland Bryant has seen the ebb and flow of Hollywood since 1929.

Formerly known as the Argyle but originally and once again known as the Sunset Tower, this is where Howard Hughes and John Wayne once lived amidst geometric forms and elegant decorative elements that have since ensured the building a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. (A star in its own right, the hotel has appeared in Wayne's World 2, Get Shorty and The Player, and was referenced in Raymond Chandler's Farewell My Lovely.) After nearly getting demolished in the late '70s, the hotel was bought and renovated by the St. James Club of Great Britain in 1986. Today it's owned by New York hotelier Jeff Klein, who in 2004 moved into Hughes' former suite to oversee the latest renovations. Now the completed Sunset Tower gleams from the lobby to the swank bistro Tower Bar to the new Argyle Salon & Spa to the 74 guestrooms. Each has floor-to-ceiling windows and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and complimentary wireless internet; many have stunning views of the city below. New, more
luxurious rooms on the top floors have king-sized beds and Jerusalem
limestone bathrooms.
