Riviera Resort & Spa: Hollywood glamour returns to the desert in style

A Palm Springs landmark hotel gets its due with a return to '60s chic ... oh, and a killer spa

Frank and Dino used to carouse while lounging poolside at the Rivera. Elvis was once a frequent guest at the older resort. Half a century ago, the who’s who of Southern California society flocked to this desert oasis, but in recent years the Riviera hasn't lived up to its Hollywood history.

Chic decor and a huge pool area with open-air bar make this throwback to classic Hollywood an almost perfect desert escape. The recent work preserved the original facade and layout, which was pioneered by its architect, Irwin Shuman, according to hotel records. Shuman modeled the Riviera after Las Vegas legends like The Sands, The Flamingo and The Stardust.

The lobby’s colossal picture windows, mirrored pillars, grand staircase and contemporary furnishings provide a gateway to a world whose mantra is about providing guests with distinctive moments. It is classic, cosmopolitan and overtly sexy.

The vibe has only been enhanced during the face lift and the entire space encourages you to strut or lounge or just gaze from behind mirrored shades—all while maintaining your elegance.

Some suites have outdoor patio areas attached.

By the gorgeous pool are cabanas and intimate fire pits ... all steps away from the tantalizing and sizeable cocktails at the Bikini Bar. The chic waterside bar is staffed by young servers with big smiles and Trina Turk uniforms (very glam).

For dining, one can sit in a covered area outside or fully indoors. Rich, red hues and desert-white dining sets accent a trendy, well-prepared menu of American cuisine. (Try the oysters rockefeller and definitely the lobster mac & cheese.)

And what would a trip to the desert be without a little luxe spa action? The new Spa Terre is an 12,000-square-foot retreat from the world. If one could 'intensely relax,' then this would be the spot. The spa (near the gym, just off the pool area) has 18 treatment rooms a coed "Buddha Lounge" with an expansive Jacuzzi and a watsu pool. The vaulted ceiling and expert tiling add to the enormity of the space and the feelings of solitude.

The Riviera is, indeed, an updated Hollywood classic, with elegant dining and chic accoutrements all around.  A gem in the desert.
