No life force in 'The Clone Wars'

On October 03, 2008

Some occasionally nifty visuals; everything else is running on fumes

BY DAVID KRONKE >TV CRITIC

Not even the die-hard fanboys liked "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," the low-budget computer-animated summer flick. Die at the box-office, it did, as Yoda might say.

Nonetheless, Cartoon Network's continuation of that movie has lower expectations - for one thing, watching it with your family doesn't set you back $40 or so. Some of the visuals are kind of cool - the ships and gadgets and robots, for example - while some are downright ugly. Some of the characters look like upgrades of the cheesy old Rankin Bass Claymation creations, with chunks of hair rather than strands, and they all sport eyes that you'd otherwise find on creepy-

looking dolls. One villainess has a bald head, smeared makeup and sagging breasts - only heroines apparently are allowed pert bosoms.

Episodes are action heavy, with lots of explosions but next to no clever characterizations. Younger viewers, who don't know any better, might enjoy them, but fans of the original films will finally have to move on and find something else to engage them.
